South Korea has Worst Gender Pay Gap in OECD
South Korean women get paid 34.1% less than South Korean men, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). That's the worst gender pay gap in the OECD, where the average gap among 27 of its 36 member countries was 13.2%.
get paid : 임금을 받다. (수동태 느낌)
The report used information from 2018, or the most recent available. It looked at full-time employees and self-employed people, comparing the difference between median income of men and women with the median income of men.
looked at : 대상으로 본다는 느낌인가봄
Although the number is better than about 10 years ago, when the gender pay gap in South Korea was over 40%, it's still much worse than other OECD countries. For example, Japan is in second place at 24.5%, and Israel is in third place at 21.8%. The smallest gap was in Belgium, at 3.7%.
차이가 많이 나긴나네요.
A 2017 report from the OECD said that South Korean culture can put pressure on women to stop working. In 2019, The Federation of Korean Trade Unions said that the main reason for the pay gap is that women stop working to have children and look after their families.
A researcher from the Korea Employment Information Service has said that once women in South Korea have left work to have children it can be difficult for them to get their job back or get full-time hours.
지금도 다시 못돌아가는 여성분이 많을꺼라 생각되네요.
The OECD agrees and has said that although it's been easier to get childcare since 2004, better parental leave and not asking people to work long hours could also help the problem.
not asking people 이게 어디랑 연결되는지 고민함
주절(?)동사는 agrees and has said
although절의 동사는 has been
that절의 동사는 could also help
Would you say that women in your country are often pressured to stop working once they start a family?
Yeah. I have seen a lot. that kind of situations. Whenever they are asking a supervisor to take a maternity leave, they look like a women who are doing bad things for company.
