South Korean Man Spent 355 Days on a Tower to Protest Samsung
After spending almost a year on top of a 25-meter traffic camera tower in Seoul, a former Samsung employee has decided to come down, ending his protest against the company. Kim Yong-hee, now 60, began working for Samsung in 1982. Soon after joining the company, he tried to get workers together to form a union, but he says he was fired after Samsung accused him of sexually assaulting an employee — something both he and the employee say did not happen.

Kim sued and got his job back, but was sent to work at a construction site in Russia, where he says employees tied him up and told him to stop his union activities. When he still refused to stop on his return to South Korea in 1995, he was fired again. Kim has been protesting Samsung ever since. Meanwhile, Samsung has accused him of various crimes against the company, and he has been arrested twice.

On June 10, 2019, Kim decided to climb up onto a traffic camera tower over the busiest intersection in Seoul. "This is my last stand against that evil behemoth," he told The New York Times by phone. At the bottom of the tower was a sign that read, "My life has been ruined just because I tried to organize a union at Samsung." Kim threatened to jump if police tried to take him down. Supporters used a rope to send him food, books and batteries for his phone.
Kim came down on May 29, after the company finally apologized and agreed to meet some of his demands. In December 2019, former Samsung board chairman Lee Sang-hoon had been given 18 months in jail for anti-union activity and breaking labor laws — one of 26 Samsung executives found guilty of anti-union activity, such as spying on union members to find embarrassing information that might force them to leave. Earlier in May, Samsung vice chairman Lee Jae-yong apologized for "all those who have been hurt in labor issues," and promised to end Samsung's "no labor union" policy
