Almost 12 Million Hectares of Tropical Forest Lost in 2019
The tropics lost 11.9 million hectares of forest — or about 119,000 square kilometers — in 2019, including 3.8 million hectares of tropical primary rainforest. According to data from the University of Maryland published by Global Forest Watch, that means the world lost an area of tropical primary forest the size of a soccer field every 6 seconds last year.
Primary forests are native forests that have not been disturbed by humans. All forests, but especially primary forests, capture and store carbon, reducing the effects of climate change. The carbon dioxide emissions associated with the loss of tropical primary forests in 2019 is equal to the amount released by 400 million cars in a year.
Global Forest Watch has described the yearly loss of tropical primary forest over the last 20 years as "stubbornly high." 2019 saw 2.8% more tropical primary forest loss than 2018, becoming the third worst year since 2000. About 25% of forest loss is caused by deforestation, according to a 2018 study published in Science, that looked at data from 2001 to 2015. Another 21% is caused by agriculture, with 31% caused by forestry, and 22% caused by wildfires.
Brazil, home of the Amazon rainforest, accounted for a third of all tropical primary forest loss in 2019. The country saw a rapid increase in deforestation for agriculture and other uses in 2019, according to Global Forest Watch. The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa lost the second most primary forest in 2019. Researchers believe much of that was due to local farming practices, where forests are cut down so food can be grown, then allowed to grow back to improve the soil. Indonesia lost the third-most primary forest in 2019. However, the amount lost was 5% less than the year before, making it the third year in a row that Indonesia has reduced the rate at which it is losing primary forest.

Q.1 Are there a lot of trees or green areas in your town or city? Please explain your answer.
A : Not really. As far as you know, I live in a big city where they don't usually have a big forest and green area. I guess we have only one big park for forestry and kids playing with green.
Q2. Would you rather visit the Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil, or Indonesia? Why?
A : Well... I've never though about traveling to Congo and Brazil. To be honest, I have no idea where the Congo is. But, Indonesia is my favorite place to travel and do water activity. As you might already know, Bali, Comodo island is the best place for scuba diving. I've been there once before. All you would do there is chill and relax. They are gonna make you feel better and awesome.
